Critical illness affects more than children’s bodies. Endless hours spent in the hospital, separation from family & friends, and the absence of everyday childhood activities take a toll on a child’s spirits. That’s where our wish-granting program, Abracadabra, comes in. Whether it’s the simple delivery of the toy they’ve been dreaming of, or the complicated operation of bringing a much-missed sibling to visit, Abracadabra tries to fulfill the hopes of children under long-term or hospice care. We work with the pediatric nurses to identify what children would most benefit from the program and what ‘wish’ they would like granted. The wish-grantings generally private affairs involving the recipients, their families and close hospital staff.
