On August 7th, early in the morning, we headed out to Haidian District to pick up 36 children from Green Garden School for our August Outdoorsy Day. The destination:
Sony Explora Science [ 索尼探梦], inside Chaoyang Park.
We arrived at the South Gate of Chaoyang Park at 9am and met our volunteers (Sara, Lara, Li Fan, and Ye Lei). Three of our volunteers came to us via the Hutong School (
www.hutongschool.com) who also generously funded this Outdoorsy Day. Sony Explora Science Centre (
http://www.sony.com.cn/ses/index.html) generously granted out students free entry to their Centre. We are grateful to both the Sony Explora Science Centre and the Hutong School for making this event possible for the children of Green Garden.
The Sony Explora Science Centre is an interactive educational centre promoting science and education in China. It is full of interesting, amusing, and informative interactive displays. The children from Green Garden, aged 10 to 12, were enthralled with the displays and activities (as were our volunteers!). Sony showcases digital technology to help young Chinese people explore and experience the attraction of science. The students were definitely stimulated by the experience and were buzzing with energy after working their way through the first two display rooms and a special toy exhibition. The children were particularly excited and entertained by the sound displays and we spent almost half our time in from of the visual voices wall, acting out sounds using our voices and instruments. We were also able to watch a show on "fish faces" that featured interesting (and very amusing) fish that appeared to be choreographed to Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker.
We finished the day off with special memorabilia photo cards, provided by Sony Explora Science Centre, and popsicles.
Thank you to our volunteers, and to Sony Explora Centre and the Hutong School.
